SIT Study Abroad: South Africa - International Relations in the Global South

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained immense perspective and confirmation about the ideas I had been considering beforehand. Concepts like leadership, justice, freedom, changemaking, peace, etc. became animated experiences of life instead of abstract theories and it directly colors how I see myself as an individual and professional now. I gained friends, family, a church community, mentors and so much more. I became a better person in South Africa and I now see myself as a much more deeply integrated and aware global citizen.

Personal Information

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

As an American, one of the most important things to me is learning and experiencing life from completely different perspectives and positionalities. The beauty of this program is that for every difference, there are at least 3 similarities of shared humanity across cultures that made my 3 months of school and work transform into a period of introspection and changemaking that will impact me for a lifetime.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Around $75
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Definitely save before hand and create a budget allowing for impulse buys and a cushion for if things come up. And if you plan to travel to other countries plan ahead and definitely budget for that.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Practice intentionally with host families and locals at stores, restaurants, etc.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • South African Culture; Holding nuance and 'taking things by the chin'
  • Emphasis on praxis and experiential learning
  • Community between staff and students
* What could be improved?
  • Communication of logistics for travel, money and such
  • Curriculum structure, maybe the order of lectures could be optimized based on excursions and transition between courses could be clearer
  • N/A
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I think I was perfectly underprepared for this experience in that the best way to approach this is to have no expectations, to leave western perspectives at the door and to exist as a perpetual student in and beyond the classroom.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
