About

This course offers three weeks of online study and three weeks abroad. The online course is open to all applicants with three semesters of college-level Kiswahili (or equivalent). The in-person J-term is open to college undergraduates who have completed the online term or provide proof of completion (or the equivalent) of at least three semesters of college-level Kiswahili. This course is designed to give students and health professionals in-depth cultural background via discussions of everyday life and contemporary issues while developing advanced language skills. It provides the language and intercultural skills needed to function in the fields of food and health, global health, community health, and the environment. The program will be delivered through a three-credit online course and a three-credit immersion course in Arusha, Tanzania. The immersion course is available to admitted SIT students only. The program will employ experiential learning opportunities and include lessons in cultural awareness, grammar, comprehension, dialogue and academic related vocabulary through lectures and discussion that are reinforced through field exercises and the homestay experience. While in the Arusha region, you will practice Kiswahili through interactions with medical and public healthcare professionals. You also will visit urban and rural healthcare centers as well as herbal clinics. Classes and language activities are taught by native teachers with experience teaching Kiswahili to foreigners by using oral proficiency-based methods. Students will also be exposed to songs and other forms of art and media to engage and enhance interactions among students and with their host families. HIGHLIGHTS Build Kiswahili language skills to prepare for a career as a health professional. Develop your ability and practice language skills during field trips. (J-term) Learn about herbal medicine and intercultural health practices. (J-term) Experience daily life with homestay families in Arusha. (J-term)

Students who are Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) Scholars will receive a $2,000 award for SIT Study Abroad semester or summer programs.

To recognize and support Experiment alumni who also participate in SIT Study Abroad programs. Experiment alumni will receive a $1,000 scholarship for semester programs and $500 scholarship for summer programs. A $400 scholarship is also available to students who indicate that they have an immediate family member who has participated in an Experiment in International Living or an SIT Study Abroad program.

The Federal Pell Grant Program provides support to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. At SIT Study Abroad, we are dedicated to breaking down financial barriers and enabling students to engage in international learning experiences. Our commitment is evident through our Pell Grant Match program, which matches up to $2,500 for semester-term students and up to $1,000 for summer-term students who receive Federal Pell Grant funding at their home colleges and universities. This initiative empowers students with financial need to engage in transformative experiences abroad, regardless of economic constraints.

To recognize students participating in the National Security Education Program (NSEP) funded award, which focuses on study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. Upon receipt of the student’s Boren confirmation letter, SIT will award a $1,000 scholarship.

The SIT Study Abroad scholarship application process has been fully integrated into our online program application.

This is an automatic scholarship to recognize and support students who participated in one or more SIT Study Abroad programs, including alumni of short-term summer programs. The scholarship will be applied to a student’s second full term of study with SIT. The scholarship is $1,000 for a fall or spring semester program or $500 for a full-term, international summer program.
