SIT Study Abroad: Tunisia & Italy - Politics & Religious Integration in the Mediterranean

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Worthwhile would be an understatement. On a cultural level, I felt as though I had integrated into the community, and on an academic level, I became intimately aware of the complexities of Tunisian politics and society.

This program perfectly fit my goals and interests, but I think even if it hadn't, I would have been elated to participate. Studying abroad will always provide you with a wider worldview, but this program matures you in a way that can only be replicated in a few places across the world.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

While I was there, the exchange rate was 3:1 USD, so budgeting was not an issue (even while living in one of the nicest parts of the country).

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

The program provided me with an immersive home-stay experience as well as an intensive 6-week language course tailored to me and my classmate's needs.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Upper Intermediate
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Engage with your surroundings. Whether it be your host family, local friends, or even your own research, you will always have an opportunity to use your language.
