SIT Study Abroad Uganda: Global Development Studies

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experience has shaped thoughts on my career path and the way development works in general. Definitely worthwhile

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Intensive learning experience. Less rigorous academic assignments than at my home university but experiential learning meant that I was learning in every moment.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Well organized and planned program, although we were often running late and overbooked.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Ugandan food is not my favorite, but the fruit is amazing and there are many options in Kampala.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt like I could smoothly navigate Ugandan culture. Language barrier and my obvious whiteness prevented me from ever feeling like a local.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

SIT Uganda takes health issues seriously and addresses them asap.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

SIT Uganda offered me opportunities that I probably would have never otherwise had as an undergrad. I now feel even more confident traveling alone and connecting with people of totally different cultures and backgrounds than mine

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $20

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Some encouragement, but most people in Kampala speak English so there is little incentive to speak Luganda all the time

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? None for Luganda
How many hours per day did you use the language?

  • Excursions and field trips
  • Independent study project
  • Discussions with experts in the field and practitioners
* What could be improved?
  • Social life was really awful - only six students on the program who I did not connect with
  • Overbooked and running late almost every day meant exhausting, long days
  • Research methods class and Luganda class
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It's a whirlwind experience, get ready to ride the wave

Luganda

Course Department:
Instructor:
Instruction Language: Luganda
Comments: The teacher was knowledgeable and good, but we did not have many Luganda classes. It definitely wasn't 45 hours, but maybe they were including time that we would be speaking Luganda out of class.
