SOAS, University of London: London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was amazing! The classes were great and the atmosphere at SOAS is wonderful! So many students from all over the world come to study there which makes the learning environment so much more interesting

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My courses were really reading intensive, and, although there is not much work to submit over the course of the term, the essays at the end of it are quite challenging.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They recquire you to do a lot of administrative work on your own, and the administration at SOAS is not that efficient.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Dinwiddy House was nice to live in. Single rooms with personal bathrooms. I shared a kitchen with 6 other people. It was clean overall.

* Food:

I cooked for myself most of the time. The prices of food are actually not quite bad if you avoid supermarkets and buy fruit/vegetables at the 1 bowl for one pound places.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Although the living situation was a little excluding, people at SOAS were very nice and I met many lovely people in my classes

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

We didn't really have any program specific adressement.

* Safety:

It's a great city to live in, and I did not feel unsafe once.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

London is very expensive. If you want to go out and enjoy things around the city, plan around $150/week (excluding travel to places outside the city)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100-$150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook for yourselves!!!

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
