Southern Cross University and Australia were awesome so glad I went!!! Past Review

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academic system at Southern Cross University was primarily essays and not many tests of quizzes. Though some programs were a little different. The work load wasn't overwhelming. I was able to get my school work done and still travel around a little. Most of the professors were really nice about knowing that I was an international student and that I wasn't used to how they do things so if I needed more time on an assignment they were willing to give it.

On-site administration of your program

The staff at Southern Cross were awesome! They were so willing to make sure that each of us were doing ok. They sent emails making sure everything with classes and roommates was going alright and if it wasn't they were right there helping you work something out. They were very welcoming in the orientation and in the fair well meeting. They were always planning free barbques or pizza parties for all the internationals and there were plenty of get to know everyone get together the first week.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The dorms were a little out dated and run down but the atmosphere of how they are set up were great. I was on Orion College and they have 4 flats in a building each with 6 rooms, bathroom, living room and kitchen. It was really nice having my own space. They also did a really good job of putting a good mix in the flat. I lived with 4 people from Australia and a girl from Austria. The other people in the other flats in the building had a good mix from all over the world.

It takes a little bit to get used to some of the food items that they have there that are a little different than what we have here but most things that you would find here in a grocery store you can find there too. Somethings are just a little different but they are pretty close to the same as here.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone was so nice! I made many life long friends from all over the World. There are many places that I can go and know that I have a place to stay with a friend. A few have already come to visit me! All the local people in Australia are very nice and are always willing to help you out even though they don't know you. All you have to do is ask if you need help.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

We had good health coverage over there and the nurses and doctors on campus were very nice. They run things a little different. I got sick over there and was for 2 weeks so I went to the doctor and instead of giving me medication like they would here at home, they told me some home remedies. I ended up being sick for about 4 weeks. So I would recommend bringing some of your usual medications with you. Or inform your doctor that you are leaving the country often they can fax a prescription to you so you can fill in at the chemist in Australia. Other than that if it was just something small that you need they were very helpful.
