Southwest Tennessee Community College: Odense - Nursing Management in Denmark

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Even though small things are done differently, nurses still face the same issues across the globe. The nursing process has no borders and can be done anywhere. I am now considering trying to work internationally as a nurse when I graduate.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The European nursing education is somewhat standardized and allows for students to easily integrate studying in a different country. Also, there is no national nursing certification exam. Once you earn your degree, you are a nurse.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The foreign teachers and nurses were wonderful. We stayed on schedule except for swapping two days around due to a lecturer being ill. I liked the size of our class because it remained under 30. Also, we were able to meet students from other countries who were also able to talk about how their health care systems are set up.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The neighborhood was safe and very close to the walking district. The city was on the smaller side which was nice for being new to an area.

* Food:

In Odense, Froggy Cafe was recommended by a local and was above expectations on taste and serving size. Price was reasonable as well.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We visited the H.C. Anderson museum. It was nice, but you had to do a lot of reading to understand what you were seeing. A taped guide would have been nice.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt Odense and Copenhagen were very safe at night and during the day.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I ended up spending about $500 of which maybe $200 went to shopping and the rest on eating out.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? In Denmark some stores offer tax reimbursement on items if you meet the minimum purchase. The store will give you a form and you must keep your receipt. Once at the airport, you can turn these forms in to the tax reimbursement counter at the airport. I got about $20 back by doing this.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
