Southwest Tennessee Community College: Odense - Nursing Management in Denmark

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
At first I was very nervous to go abroad but once I made it there, its like a big door opened to show me that the world is a small place and we should see as much of it as we can in our lifetime. I enjoyed the people/students of Denmark very much. As the first group of Nursing students sent there, I felt that there were a few bunps in the road because not only were we as the students feeling it out but the instructors were as well, but I definately think that now that we have been there and done it that it will pave a path for the next group who is lucky enough to be able to go.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed in the Cab Inn hotel in Odense and the only thing I didn't care for was the size of the rooms. They were TINY, but from what I hear, that is very common in Europe.

* Food:

The food provided form the school and hospital for us was so delicious!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We visited the Hans Christian Anderson Museum and the Embassy there in Copenhagen. Both were very interesting.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

There were not any vaccines that I was made aware of that were needed prior to arrival in Denmark. The bike lanes have the right of way, so look both way before crossing the street and the bike lane!!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? We stayed for 8 days and it really depends on how many souveniers you have to bring back to your family. It was my first time abroad and none of my family has been abroad so everyone wanted something. I took a little over $800 and spent all of it. On food and souveniers and taxis in my free time.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cost of living is a lot higher there. Budget yourself for daily spending so you don't spend all of your money on the first day.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? A student with an open mind that wants to experience nursing from many aspects would definately benefit from this program because to see healthcare in a whole different country and ran by the government is so different than I was used to and just opened my eyes to how things are vastly different from country to countrry.
