Southwest Tennessee Community College: Odense - Nursing Management in Denmark

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Understandings that I gained were: why they approach nursing in a different aspect than USA---they start out with more theorists than clinical practice. I learned a lot about why the people of Denmark live their type of lifestyles. Usually we know--"they do this or that over there". Rather than just knowing that, I now understand why.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

They focus a lot on Nursing Theorists. They do not have higher than a Bachelor degree in Nursing. Their education to universities are funded through tax dollars---their is no tuition for school. Their nursing attire for the work place is more strict than in the USA. To cut down on infection/potential infection, the nurses cannot wear sleeves passed the elbow and they are not allowed to wear jewelry. Most of the nursing practice is similar to what is practiced in the USA. They are more "we" focused than in USA. They also have a lot of time to practice personal driven care to each patient rather that just fixing the paitent's problem and then discharge. They talked alot about touch and human compassion.

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The hotels were great. It was an experience to see the different setups. We were told before departure to Denmark that they don't provide washcloths (bath towels), but they provided the drying towels.

* Food:

Awesome, but very pricey even for the samll dish.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We were very busy and did not have much time for cultural events. On arrival to the city, we were able to get in a visit to Hans Christian Andersen's museum. Some limited site seeing occurred, once we were finished with the day's school business.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? paying for water.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? My words of wisdom would be for students to be objective and not to think others are doing things wrong, if they are not done they way you do them. A student who would benefit is someone who is willing to learn about others and see how that learning can make thier life or way of thought better.
