Spain Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Studying abroad has open my eyes and made me aware of other countries. I have found that the USA has a boxed it self in and people are unaware of things that are going on around in other countries. It was a very good opportunity to get to experience a new culture and there thought process. And most of all making new friends that you make and you take back home.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I feel like my grammar teacher was closed off to us. She did not answer are questions that we had properly, and sometimes she did not have a proper attitude. The class size was good and my conversation teacher was great. The program here had a program were you could go and talk to other locals for practice. This program and some of the teacher here were great.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My host family lived very close to the center of town. It was very convenient for my night life because i was very close to all the spots we would hang out. The school was a good walk but it was not bad either. My host parent were very nice and made me feel welcomed in there home. The only thing we had a slight issue with was the food, but they made an adjustment for me.

* Food:

Eating out can add up overtime. Don't eat out in the touristy parts of town. The food had a lot of bread and olive-oil but over all everything was good.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The school did a party at the school and it was great to see the teacher drinking and just being really social with all students. I loved to see the teacher dance flamenco. Its part of there culture to know how to dance like that even if your not professional.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Ronda is a very safe town. It is a rare occasion if anybody gets hurt. I never got sick so i don't know how the health care system would work.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Make a budget of how much you should spend a week and have extra money for emergencies. Withdraw money from ATMs add up over time i think its better to make large withdrawals than a lot of little ones.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

All the locals there talked Spanish. The only time i talked English was when i was with my friends from America and Ireland. I did in fact talked a lot of Spanish with my host parents and locals.
