Spain Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs
I learned that if you really want to learn Spanish, or whatever language, you need to go without a program, or be really proactive about meeting locals (going with a program CAN work).

I loved taking classes at the CLM and meeting people from different countries, but overall, the rigor just wasn´t there. |

|

Yes
|

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
Careful--no one in my program wanted to speak Spanish outside of class, so if you´re in Spain for an immersion experience, try really hard to meet locals through intercambios/going to bars, events, etc. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Advanced |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Adv. Latin American Lit. 452 |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | USE the intercambio system set up by CLM! I didn´t, and I really regretted it. |

The Academic or LinguistYou went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you.
