Spain Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Definitely! I learned that there is a whole new world out there, and living somewhere else allowed me to value what I take for granted in my own country, but it also allowed me to see what it is that our country has to work on and things that should change. I heard a lot of different opinions on everything, tried new foods, and met lots of great people that I plan to keep in touch with.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Being a native Spanish speaker, I did not think that I would learn very much at the program, but I did. I learned something new everyday, and the instructors were very knowledgeable of the subjects. They were also very friendly, enthusiastic, and student-friendly.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

All the staff was very accessible, they were willing to answer any questions at whatever time, and they gave us suggestions as well as warnings about places, people, and activities. The program size was perfect; the classes were small, but there was enough diversity.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my host family, and my house was very close to school and everything else. I felt very safe in the neighborhood.

* Food:

My host family prepared very good meals, and took into consideration my likes and dislikes. I enjoyed almost every meal I was given at home. I did not particularly like Spanish food, but I tried to find places that served good and inexpensive food, and I found a few close to home.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I met a lot of diverse and interesting people while traveling in other Spanish cities, and I learned a lot about their customs and their ideas. I tried to experience as many things as possible, including traveling to other cities for special events and it was worth it.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt very safe walking by myself at night in Ronda, which is a smaller city, but this is definitely not a good idea in larger cities. If you're a girl, always stay in a group and watch your valuables, specially on public transportation.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eating in restaurants is a lot more expensive than I expected, so if you want to spend less, stay away from tourist places. Always ask for prices before you order, and remember that you are not required to tip in a lot of places.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

Even though I already spoke Spanish before I left for the program, I learned tons of information, as well as terms that aren't used in the Spanish that I already knew.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Keep an open mind, be willing to try new things, budget your money well, and careful with your ATM cards!!
