Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The professors truly took advantage of the global and metropolitan opportunities offered in each city. The global perspective was integrated into the classroom, while also extending beyond the classroom's four walls. The courses grounded my engagement with my host cities, allowing me to more fully appreciate the culture and history of each unique site.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The on-site staff was very helpful and offered a tremendous comfort to the students, many of whom were in an unfamiliar place for the first time. The guidance that the staff provided allowed us to use our time wisely and take advantage of a local's expertise.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing on campus facilitated many friendships among the study abroad participants. This element of the program was truly beneficial, as it is critical to have a strong peer-driven support system.

* Food:

Food culture is a huge part of the immersion experience. The food on and off campus allowed us to become more familiar with our host cities in this unique way. Although the food in each city/country is different, it is important to keep an open mind and enjoy the unique food culture of each city.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I had the great opportunity to travel to seven different countries during my semester abroad, each of which has a unique culture and history. I also had the opportunity to serve in soup kitchens regularly in three different cities, adding to my Vincentian and metropolitan experience through St. John's University. Serving abroad has given me a deeper understanding of social justice issues globally. I also had the unique opportunity to spend Easter Sunday in St. Peter's Square, attending Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. This was a truly global experience, as there were pilgrims from all over the world in one place for the same reason. Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to become a global citizen. I am grateful for having participated in a Global Studies program, since it truly defined my college experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Each campus felt safe and secure.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The course work allowed me to feel more comfortable in each city; I am confident that I can go back with my family and show them the sights that I know intimately because of my study abroad program.
* What could be improved?
  • Five weeks goes by so quickly! It was hard to say good-bye to each city, since it seemed like I had just arrived. However, it is exciting to be in a new place and getting to explore a brand new city.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Studying abroad is a great opportunity for students looking for more out of their college experience. My St. John's experience would not have seemed complete without my Global Studies program. My time abroad prepared me for the job market post-graduation.
