Interesting Courses and Beautiful Campus Past Review
By Hanna Madkour (University of Minnesota - Twin Cities) - abroad from 08/22/2018 to 12/20/2018 with
Study Abroad in Egypt at the American University in Cairo
After living by myself for 5 months in Egypt, I can easily say I was shocked by how independent and self-sufficient I became. Working through a language barrier in your daily life isn't easy, but things got much easier after the first few weeks

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
A broad course offering, and since I was able to direct enroll, I was able to take courses in a lot of different subjects I wouldn't have at my home institution |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I didn't live in campus housing, and instead stayed in an apartment about 15 minutes away. |
* Food: |
I mostly only ever got coffee while I was on campus, didn't really try any of the other vendors. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
AUC is quite far from Cairo/anything that makes Egypt feel like, well, Egypt. It's easy to take an Uber into the city, but you do feel removed from Egyptian culture if you just stay in the compound around campus. The international student office is fantastic in organizing outings for all the international students |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
AUC was just too far from an authentic experience in Egypt, which is what I was hoping I'd get this semester. Sure, you can spend your free time going into Cairo, but being so far away in a compound for most of the week was rather dull. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Food is generally affordable depending of what you buy, how often you eat out, etc. My biggest weekly expense was transportation since I lived off campus. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |
