Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Each of my professors were very knowledgeable and passionate about the course they were teaching. They challenged us to do our best and to be creative, making it a very interactive learning experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The on-site administration of my program was very creative and organized. They gave us the most diverse excursions for the best prices and even made sure to celebrate birthdays! Any classroom changes were handled within the first 2 days of classes and there were always plenty of volunteer activities to do throughout the weeks.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Both my host family and my roommates were amazing. They did an excellent job with matching us.

* Food:

The food was amazing! Our host mom made us traditional meals every day and even packed our lunches to bring to school or when we went on day trips.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The only thing that prevented me from completely integrating with the local culture was the fact that all of the SOL students often hung out and spoke English to each other. It was hard to escape that and find an environment where I could be fully immersed in Spanish.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

During our drive to Manuel Antonio, my allergies were out of hand and I desperately needed nasal spray. I let my program directors know and they arranged for the bus driver to stop in town by some pharmacies. One of the directors went with me once we stopped to go to 2 different pharmacies until we found what I needed. It is not usual to have individual pharmacies located throughout California, however in this case they exactly what I needed- just different medical compositions. I did not need to get any extra vaccines separate from what is required of me from my university in order to study with this program.

* Safety:

Costa Rica is a peaceful country based off of its focus on education and health. However there is still a problem with pick-pocketers and theft. As long as you are aware of your items and keep them on you at all times, your items will be safe. Never did I feel personally at risk or in danger while I was there. Just like in any country, you don't want to walk alone at night or go off with strangers.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

It was inexpensive, diverse and full of adventure!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Out of all the programs I looked into for studying abroad in Latin America, Sol Education Abroad was the most affordable. You really only need money for souvenirs. Otherwise, I payed for several meals on our weekend excursions. Bring as much as you want to spend in terms of travel and souvenirs, because your living cost is essentially included in the program cost!

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $50
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I saved up money for the free weekends when I wanted to travel and tried not to spend money on food since our host family provided all of our meals for us. In terms of general saving, it is always good to set aside savings each month when you get a paycheck. Always reach out to your extended family members- they are often excited to support you on your adventures.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Our professors and directors spoke to us in Spanish and they always encouraged us to speak in Spanish to each other. Our host families only spoke to us in Spanish, which was very helpful since we spent a lot of time with them.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Intermediate
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Find other students that really want to learn the language by only speaking that language throughout the day and spend time with them. Make local friends and spend lots of time with your host family or getting to know your directors!

  • The cost was affordable
  • The cultural activities/excursions were what I had hoped for
  • The host family living arrangement made me feel more at home and part of the local culture
* What could be improved?
  • The Poas Volcano excursion could be switched out for another since it is usually a hit or miss with seeing the crater
  • A map of the local bus stops would be so helpful for future students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had known how useful a trench coat and Chacos would have been, and some short heels for dancing!

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Avanzado 1

Course Department: Programas Internacionales
Instructor: Andrea López Jiménez
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: The class was challenging with the amount of projects and exams squeezed into 3 weeks time. However it was extremely creative and interactive. I learned so much in those 3 weeks because of the professor's expertise and passion for the course. She went out of her way to see us succeed through offering tutoring and being available to edit our work. The class size was smaller than what I normally have back home, which allowed for each of us to participate the desired amount. We were assessed through papers, exams, homework and individual/group expositions.
Credit Transfer Issues: SOL has assured us that we should receive our transcript within one month.

Comments: This course was challenging because it was all about fostering conversation in the class. Thus I was able to participate a lot during each class. The teach was very knowledgeable and prepared for each topic we discussed. She did a great job at creating an open environment for us to speak about our opinions in class. Additionally, she gave us projects, exams and papers to assess the skills we had learned in class.
Credit Transfer Issues: SOL has assured us that we will receive our transcript within one month after the program has ended.

Cultura y Civilizaciones Latinoamericana

Course Department: Programas Internacionales
Instructor: Laura Natalia Ramírez Rodríguez
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: This course was the most challenging of all 3. However this teacher was just as knowledgeable and prepared as the others. She did an excellent job at utilizing the location encourage our learning. We visited a museum to learn more about ancient civilizations, which we had discussed in class. We also worked outside often to do art, using our own expression of art to illustrate for the class what we had learned. I participated less in talking since this class was more lecture-based, however we participated a lot through the different activities she arranged for us. We were assessed through exams, group expositions, and in-class activities.
Credit Transfer Issues: SOL has assured us that we will receive our transcript within one month after the program has ended.
