Study Abroad Programs in Egypt

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Completely worthwhile. I was looking for an adventure, something as far from my experience as a New Yorker as possible. I certainly got that.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I learned through coursework and hands-on work in the field of archaeology. I also learned a lot about myself while living out in the desert that I couldn't imagine before being in Egypt.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

A dighouse- living with fellow students, professors, and a team of international archaeologists.

Dighouse is totally oasite and beautiful.

* Food:

I love Egyptian food, but it isn't as balanced as what I eat in the US. Not very many vegetables.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Egypt is cheaper that anyone would ever imagine. I would recommend bringing money for travel after the program, but most amenities are taken care of while studying and working.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?

With zero knowledge of Arabic before leaving for Egypt, I left with adequate conversational knowledge.
