Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Being a Marketing major with an interest in Advertising and Global Marketing this course was perfect for me, as it allowed me to learn about how business is conducted in other cultures and countries. Through reading a Global Skills book and the hands-on experience, I definitely feel more prepared for me career. In addition to attending class both prior to leaving and throughout the trip, we had time to explore and visit sites known to South Africa, such as Robben Island, Table Mountain, a safari, Cape Town, and much more. For my first experience abroad, I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful place or experience. I fell in love with traveling and made some friends that I will have for a lifetime. I would highly recommend this trip and the professor is a lot of fun. :) I learned a new thing everyday and I wouldn't have selected another course and was one of the best decisions I have made.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The professor was very helpful being from South Africa. She had great knowledge of what the best places to eat, live, and visit. She was very helpful in answering any questions that I had prior to the trip.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The places were beautiful and definitely very comfortable. I felt safe and our next door neighbors kept a close eye on us and were there if we needed them.

* Food:

The food was wonderful and I went out of my comfort zone to try some of the native foods and different things that I probably would not have tried otherwise. I ended up liking a lot of the food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We had the opportunity to participate in a local rotary club meeting and interact with South African business professionals, visit a winery and learn about operations, interact with local people, and complete a service-learning project where we worked with people from the villages. We had the opportunity to experience the culture through attending a dinner theater with traditional dancing. I felt very integrated.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

My program offered a pre-depature consultation with our student health center, where we received health advice and the vaccinations that we need prior to our trip. I had to take a typhoid pill and received a hepatitis B vaccination.

* Safety:

I felt safe when I was with my group and our instructor always had an eye on us and knew where we were at all times. Our guides each had a phone if we needed to be in contact or needed help. It is definitely not safe to travel alone by yourself, always have at least one person with you at all times. Don't go out alone after it is dark and make sure you keep an eye on your belongings.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

2.5 The exchange rate of Rand to USD was very reasonable, so things were not as expensive as it would be to purchase at home. We only had to purchase food on own during stops at the gas station or breaks, if we wanted a drink at restaurants, or if we wanted to purchase gifts. We always had food that we purchased at the grocery store with money budgeted. We hardly had to pay for any meals on our own

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $120
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Search around to find the best deals. Almost every location has postcards and little trinkets. If you shop at a market, you have to be careful, as the sales people may try to cheat you. Also, they like it if you barter or negotiate on a price, so tell them that you only have 20 rand or so to spend and you are willing to pay no more than that and they will barter to get a reasonable price. You just have to be good at it.

Comments: The teacher was very knowledgeable and knew the best sites to see. We never got lost as she was always well prepared and knew her way around the country. She was very fun and always had an answer for my questions. We completed a lot of our homework prior to the trip as each student gave a presentation on a chapter of the course book that they read (some gave presentations in South Africa while others did it in the airport or different sites). After each presentation, we had to write an evaluation and what we learned from the chapter, participate in all of the required activities (with some optional such as bungee jumping and shark diving), complete daily journal entries, and a final group project.
