SUNY Binghamton: New Delhi - Technology, Economy, and Society in India

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much on this trip- about myself, India, it's people, customs, culture, economy, businesses, history, and everyday way of life. I think one of the best ways to learn about your own values, preferences, and character is to travel, and I still hold that belief after this trip. I highly recommend this trip for anyone looking for an incredible experience that you will never forget.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I learned a lot about the way of life, the culture, economy, different business industries, various companies and their practices, as well as traditions.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Professor Gupta and Professor Dunn were excellent. They were very helpful, understanding, compassionate, fun, energetic, and accommodating. We all understood that this was their first time doing this trip too, so considering the circumstances, the trip was a total success! For the upcoming trips I would suggest a group this size or maybe smaller, which could make things run a bit more smoothly.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed in a hotel most of the time, but while visiting Lovely Professional University we stayed in dorms.

There were some problems with the water (no hot water), and the internet signal didn't always work - but these were minor issues for me. For the most part I was happy with the hotel - it did the job. We stayed in a safe, relatively clean, hotel with a friendly, accommodating staff.

* Food:

I love Indian food, I didn't love the breakfast's, but they weren't bad - they just got very repetitive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Very fun activities were planned. It was a great group to go with and I had a lot of fun.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

At certain points in the trip we were accompanied by guards with large guns, so I guess I felt safe then, but it seemed a bit unnecessary. I felt safe everywhere I went in India, I think some people just got worried because of the masses of people, but they were missing the cultural difference I think - life is different there, and they are used to large masses of people being in one place, so they feel safe, so we should too.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent $200 USD while I was there. It was enough for everything I wanted to buy and spend money on.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No unanticipated expenses.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

No change.
