SUNY Binghamton: Nottingham - Exchange & Study Abroad Program at University of Nottingham

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Become more independent and outgoing because you have to be. If you want to get things done, you have to do them for yourself. Figure out to live around others with different cultures and different backgrounds, both British and American.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was very beneficial for me as an individual to adapt to the English version of education.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Placed in a block of British students which I enjoyed very much. Allowed me to become apart of the British experience rather than just examine it as an outsider.

* Food:

Compared to home university the select was poor and food was less than satisfactory.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I would do this all over again without a doubt!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Weekly expenditures varied while about the host university. It depends on how much an individual wants to go out, or eat outside of the halls. The month break in which most international students traveled Europe was extremely expensive. Over the semester I spent close to $5,000 (American dollars). The exchange rate will get the best of you!
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The exchange rate was hard to adjust to and expenses such as toiletries and random groceries will add up quick.

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Do it! It's by far one of the greatest experiences you'll have! It's not easy to be so far away from family and friends, but you will quickly become a part of your own family abroad. Find international students abroad, they are in the same boat and I know that the friends I have made will be life long friendships!
