SUNY Binghamton: Shenzhen - Understanding Contemporary China

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely worth while. Immersingmyself into another culture is the easiest and most exciting way to learn about it.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Winter 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The professors at Shenzhen were excellent and extremely knowledgable of both the subject matter and America's views on various topics.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Overall the program was put together well, but there were times where communication was lacking when it came to the schedule.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Basic (which was fine) Dirty

The location was perfect, but the rooms were really dirty when we arrived and we were not able to purchase any cleaning supplies for a few days.

* Food:

Dining (Rice) halls had a lot of variety and were easily accessible. Portions were always large and inexpensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everytime we travelled,we were accompanied by Shenzhen University staff or students.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The expenses were outllined well. It's always good to overestimate what you anticipate you will need so that you don't feel strapped down if something extra that you want to do comes up.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

The language professor at the University was excellent. Easily the best professor that we met. He encouraged us to practice and to continue learning.
