SUNY Binghamton: Shenzhen - Understanding Contemporary China
Absolutely worthwhile. China is going to impact the world politically, socially, economically, and culturally. It was very important to travel there and gain a sense of what challenges they face, and what opportunities they have for their own people.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Though the classroom component was not very rigorous, the overall experiential component was an incredible cultural learning experience. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
This program is brand new, so problems and hang ups will occur, but I still felt that organization was poor on all fronts. Though when we had questions, the abroad institution was generally responsive to us. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Not what we are used to in the U.S. Accessibility to heat and water was terrible.

|
* Food: |
Food was good all around, and there was plenty of it. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | I spent relatively little each week on food. Maybe twenty USD. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | There were few if any unanticipated expenses. The program came in under my personal budget. |
Language
Language acquisition improvement? |
I went to China with no Chinese comprehension, but I came back with a small amount of language skills. Still, I feel like I could have learned more, even though our professor was fantastic. |
