The major focus of this global service learning course is to organize student/faculty efforts to provide practical assistance to the people of Haiti.
The island nation of Haiti is located in the Caribbean and is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Most people living in Haiti are at high risk for major infectious diseases, in many cases because of unsafe water, inadequate housing, poor sanitation and widespread poverty.
In a country where 1/3 of the population is under 14 years old, improvements in pediatric health are a vital and necessary requirement towards Haiti’s economic, social, and political development. There is a chronic shortage of health care personnel, and hospitals lack resources, a situation that became readily apparent after the devastating earthquake.
By partnering with local volunteers who have experience working in Haiti, SUNY Broome and other SUNY students can use their training to provide simple heath education and medical services at clinics and can participate in projects aimed at providing clean water, bathroom facilities, computer literacy training and solar power.
