SUNY Geneseo: El Sauce - Service Learning in Nicaragua

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Without a doubt. I learned a lot about another culture as well as about myself. It has sparked a lot of thought about Peace Corps or other service programs for my future.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everything was wonderful! I couldn't have asked for better on-site administration. They were laid back, but organized. They were fun, but focused, and they had great knowledge of the host country as well as of the U.S.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I felt very safe and very comfortable in all the places I stayed. Everything was within walking distance and the host families were extremely hospitable.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The trips into the mountains (Ocotal) were amazing!! Beautiful, fun, adventurous, and a whole new lifestyle!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I always felt completely safe and others students who had health problems were treated right away and were very well taken care of.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I rarely spent money on food, as it was basically all included in the program. Personal expenses really only amounted to souvenirs and random other activities.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? There really isn't a lot you need to spend money on during this program - anything you do spend money on is just for extra stuff that you personally want to do.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
