Personal Information

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

logistically, things are run very differently down there, the classes were not very academically challenging but practically difficult to be successful.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The international office was helpful when approached, but in general very uninvolved throughout the semester. Could have done a better job acclimating international students during orientation.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Lived in a beautiful residence hall, some other international students were not as lucky. Aside from the benefits of the community and beauty of the res, a lot like living in boarding school with a great deal of rules and restrictions.

* Food:

All meals had to be eaten in allocated dining hall at specific times. Not terrible quality, and always given choices, but still dining hall food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $20 - $70

  • Unique culture/ political climate of the country
  • Physical beauty of the country
* What could be improved?
  • A course for international students on South African history/ culture
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The weather is sporadic and gets cold in winter, you should beware of limiting your experience and make a big effort to become friends with locals, not just other Americans.
