Worth every dollar (and every loan!) Past Review
By Julia B (PSYCHOLOGY., SUNY - College at Geneseo) for
SUNY Geneseo: Paris - Humanities Course
It was definitely worthwhile. I've always wanted to go to Paris and it was everything I hoped it would be.
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I think the course was enough work for me to learn and adequately complete the course yet be able to enjoy Paris at the same time. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Dr. Evans was always there to help you and always willing to help you. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Lived with 3 other Geneseo students in a suite-like room with a bathroom (2 showers). It was like a hostel, only nicer. I would say in between a motel and a hostel. It could be loud at times, depending on the obnoxious British kids that might be placed in rooms adjacent and construction/garbage trucks outside in the morning. Internet was only available in the public lobby for free. You had to pay 20 euros for a month's worth of internet if you wanted it in your room (I did this). Overall, you get what you pay for! It was worth it! |
* Food: |
The FIAP's food got old fast. Ugh. At least they always had baguettes and cheese. The cafes were always good but got expensive! |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Bastille Day was awesome. The Eiffel Tower was on our main metro line, so we went there a lot--to study even. There's so much to do and see. The Catacombs are awesome too, and you can walk there. Versailles was amazing, of course, Belgium and Normandy were great. EVERYTHING. I wouldn't change a thing. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I didn't experience any health problems, but I felt safe enough if I did. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | I spent about 2500 dollars on food and personal expenses for the entire trip. Bring an ATM card that works overseas. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | -metro tickets ( 1.75 or so a ride adds up) -food (all 3 meals aren't included) -souvenirs -going out at night -attractions/touristy things (going up in the eiffel tower or notre dame) |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
