SUNY Geneseo: Traveling - Mediterranean Roots Summer Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I can't even begin to describe what I have learned and gained from this experience. It was EXTREMELY worthwhile and the best time I have had in my life. I learned so much and saw so many incredible places. I feel like I truly grew up during the program and became way more globally aware. It definitely changed me for the better and I will never forget it!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The combination of hands on learning with classroom lecture was perfect! Even though we were moving around a lot there was always learning going on. I learned so much more from Dr. Savellos than just Humanities. He was a wonderful professor!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Dr. Savellos did a great job running the program abroad.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

There was only one place we stayed that I had a problem with and it was chosen by the Study Abroad office (not Dr. Savellos). In Rome, we stayed in The Centro and it wasn't the best experience. There was no air conditioning and we slept in bunk beds. The part that annoyed me the most was that it wasn't really central to anything so we had to rely on a fairly long bus ride to get anywhere. There were several bus strikes that happened while we were there, which left us unable to go anywhere. I would suggest that for next years group another arrangement is made for living in Rome.

* Food:

All of our meals that were included were very good. I also like the amount of meals that were included because it still allowed us to go out and experience the food on our own.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt like everywhere we went the people were really friendly. Dr. Savellos did a great job of teaching us about the locals and making us feel comfortable where we were staying.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There were no health issues that I know of.

* Safety:

I felt completely safe at all times during the trip.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

2.5 because we did have to buy our own food. I choose to go out more than cook, so I made the decision to spend more money.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Only some of our food was included, so depending on the week I probably spent between $100-$200.

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

  • The people I was with.
  • The professor.
  • The places I got to see.
* What could be improved?
  • Better housing in Rome.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had a better understanding of how much we would be having to maneuver our luggage. Maybe then I would have packed a little lighter.
