SUNY New Paltz: Besancon - Study Abroad at Université de Franche Comte
It was worthwhile for the the experience but academically it was a waste of time.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The workload was a joke. I was placed in Level B2.5. The workload for the Level C students seemed to be slightly bigger. The grading system is the typical French system out of 20 points. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
No one was specifically knowledgeable about the American system other than our coordinator. I personally never had any issues with the administration. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I stayed at the Crous Universite in the Mallarmé building. The professors jokingly referred to it as the prison with good reason. My room was a 2x9 meter room that had a desk, a bed, a sink, 2 chairs, a fridge, and a closet with some shelves. I lost electricity 3 times. It took them over 24 hours to send someone to fix it each time. Showers and toilets are shared on each floor. Toilets have no toilet seats and you provide your own toilet paper. The "kitchen" is a room with 2 hot plates and a sink. Be prepared to spend at least a half hour to do something as simple as boil water. Some people bought electric water heaters and I bought a toaster oven. These made our lives significantly easier.

See housing description |
* Food: |
The food at the Resto-U's was very hit or miss. Sometimes it was awesome but other times you got stuck with mashed fish and potatoes. Not the best but for 2.90 euros it'll be the cheapest meal you'll find. They certainly give you a lot of food for that amount of money. If you actually like what they are serving, you won't walk away hungry. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Thanks to the friends I made and our field trips to Laussane and Strasbourg, I feel that I really enjoyed this experience. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Besançon is a very safe city. I never felt in danger even walking alone at night. I had no experience with bad health but other students that did were taken care of promptly and well. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | roughly 150 euros. The program gave us 220 euros a month for food. This is not something that they do every semester so be prepared to buy your own food. That works out to being enough for 3 meals a day at the resto-U and that's it. I preferred to cook for myself so I spent a lot more. They also payed for our 25 euro a month bus passes which pay for themselves within the first week. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Be prepared to spend 55 euros on a tax stamp to present at the immigration office. Bus passes are 25 euros a month. |
Language
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
|
Language acquisition improvement? |
I did not improve as much as I had expected, however I am extremely comfortable speaking French with native and non native speakers now. I understand most of what is said to me. |

Grammaire |

Instructor: | Yves Simard |
Instruction Language: | French |
Comments: | This class made little to no sense. The teacher talked in circles and we spent every class talking about pronouns and grammar methodology. Every homework assignment was simply replacing pronouns. It was a terrible class. |

Comments: | The professor was easily one of the best I've ever had. The class was simple. We would mostly use the hour and a half of class discussing various topics. We would occasionally listen to audio clips. We had to do a presentation at the end. |

Instructor: | Jacques Couillerot |

Comments: | Teacher is very knowledgeable. He corrects your assignments and tests in front of the class. While I didn't like this, it helped to make us aware to our common mistakes. Most of the class time was spent reading and discussing articles and correcting our work in front of the class |

Comments: | Class was kind of a joke. Professor was really nice but generally shot down any answer other than his own as incorrect. Not the best teacher. |

Comments: | Professor was very knowledgeable on subject. Class was spent half in a computer lab doing a listening activity. Second half was spent discussing the activity and trying to improve our own pronunciation of French. |
