SUNY New Paltz: London - London Art Seminar

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I really enjoyed the city. I made some great friends from New Paltz and got to see some really cool things. Although I chose to cut my stay there short, it was for the class experience ONLY, not the actual city.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I'm only giving it this rating because I found that it was not a good idea to use this for general education requirements. While it is a great (but extremely rigorous) program for art majors, it is not good for those who generally have little interest in art.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Nice, but a bit confused on the city. We were very confused on directions most of the time.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The flats were awesome. I enjoyed them- the only downside was that the streets could be a bit noisy and the location was not exactly ideal for nightlife.

* Food:

There were plenty of places for food available, and most of them were pretty decent! The only downside is that it is expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

You generally stick out as an American, but learn some of their basic customs and things become a lot easier.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

N/A

* Safety:

I never felt unsafe in this city. They warn you about pickpockets, so you do have to be careful, but nothing was threatening at all.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

This is a very expensive city! Exchange rates are horrible.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Around 200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Bring snacks with you, go to the grocery store and prepare most of your meals.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The city
  • Friends
  • Overall experience
* What could be improved?
  • Course content
  • Instructor knowledge of direction
  • More tourism/ free time
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would love to go back to London, but only for vacation purposes. I think this program should be made for art majors only, because I really struggled with the museum visits, and felt really clueless looking at the art work. I really wanted to go for the cultural experience, rather than the art history. The itinerary is very rigorous, and the days are extremely long. Had I known how art intensive this course actually was, I wouldn't have been a part of it.

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
