SUU: Harry Potter in the UK

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I feel that I gained insight into a different pacing of life, and also a deeper appreciation for the Harry Potter series and how JK Rowling's culture inspired her writing.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I hoped for more formal instruction to complement the course material, but the assignments were quite rigorous.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Not applicable.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Our professor aleays had great recommendations and we were encouraged to be adventurous.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved going with other students and professors from SUU. I may not take the same class if I went again, but I would want to do a similar program set up.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $120 to $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Saving is worth it. You are only there once, so you don't want to have to worry too much about pimchimg pennies. It is easy to live cheap while abroad, just as easy as at home, but half the trip for me was trying things there that I couldn't at home.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Academic or Linguist
You went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you!

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Topics in Literature: Harry Potter

Course Department: England
Instructor: Dr. Kyle Bishop
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The location was put to good use and instruction covered a combination of gaining skills abroad as well as course material. The assignments were enjoyable and intense, but my one regret is that lectures sort of petered out after thefirst week. I hoped for more on sight instruction comnected directly to the course material.
Credit Transfer Issues: Nope. It was through SUU.
