Sweet Briar College: JYS in Seville

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have always been obsessed with the Spanish language. Believe it or not, though, my study abroad experience left me more in love with Spain and the Spanish language than ever!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My classes were very interesting. However, that's not what I loved most about the program. The relationships I forged with JYS staff, my host family, Spaniards, and fellow students made it more than worth it.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Every staff member in JYS is extremely friendly. They want you to make the most out of your time abroad and are more than willing to give you advice about the Spanish language.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was extremely fortunate to have a host family that not only enjoyed spending time with me, but that also encouraged me to get out and explore Spain. I couldn't have asked for a better living situation.

* Food:

My host family was absolutely amazing, and the cooking was no different. My host family not only provided good food, but also taught me recipes that I use today.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Feria de Abril and Semana Santa are two springtime cultural events that one absolutely must go to if studying abroad in Spain. If you choose JYS, I would recommend going in the spring, when these two huge cultural events take place.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Thankfully, I did not have a medical emergency while abroad. I did not need any vaccines to go to Spain.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced my Spanish skills with my host family. I needed to use Spanish all day every day. Although a few students in my program spoke mostly in English, most put forth a huge effort to speak mostly in Spanish.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
