Spring Semester in Madrid Past Review

Syracuse University: Madrid - Syracuse University in Madrid

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was the most worthwhile experience of my entire life. I learned to speak Spanish fluently, learned to sleep while my roommate gently snored one foot away, and learned how to eat a prawn buried in Paella that still has his head on.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Where do I begin? I learned, I loved, and I missed a lot of classes due to hangovers.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone was very helpful and eager to help you solve your problems and find things in the city.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived with a host mother who was great! Only problem was sharing a very small bedroom with my roommate.

* Food:

It was hit or miss in Spain. I had great food and I also had very mediocre food. H

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Best experience of my entire life. Besides going to a YJ dinner once in the East village.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I've felt more a risk on my college campus. Madrid is by far one of the safest city's in the world.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I left almost fully bilingual in coversational Spanish.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? GO...if you're a Syracuse student. Otherwise take heed. It's a lot of Syraucse students and I think we could probably be pretty exclusive (some intentional, some not).

Comments: Great class! I couldn't have survived Madrid without it. Our professor insisted we work on our accents, which was tedious at first, but very beneficial later on.
