Temple University International Programs: Rome - Temple University in Rome

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I realized how independent I am and how much I can handle. I was absolutely terrified to study abroad and leave my friends and family but I did so much better than I ever imagined was possible. I truly am not the same person as before so far as I am more self-reliant and confident in myself. Studying in Rome was truly an invaluable experience.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Temple Rome offers difficult courses in which a lot is expected out of you. However, some schools may not find it to be as rigorous as their home university. Temple Rome has higher expectations that many other programs.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

More than helpful and always on top of things. There was always someone there to answer any questions I had.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Housing was wonderful. the apartments were big and clean and had maid service and a full size kitchen. Loved being in a Roman neighborhood and taking the metro to school. Location near the Vatican City was amazing.

* Food:

The food in Italy is incredible but none is offered from the program on a regular basis. It can be a little pricey if you're used to a meal plan but it was worth eating as the locals do.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I lived with American students so I was not very immersed. However, the program tried to incorporate things such as Wine Tasting, a walking tour, and a talk about the social and political climate of Italy at the time. Integration was so-so but a lot of that was my own doing.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I hurt my toe during the semester and asked for it to be seen by a local doctor. I asked someone in my program and had an appointment set in less than an hour and got seen in a local hospital just days later. The trip to the hospital was long but I was well taken care of and was given step by step directions on how to get there. Additionally, my student travelers health insurance ensured that I paid nothing for the visit at all.

* Safety:

I always felt very safe in Rome. Besides the pick-pockets, which I was able to avoid, there were no other major threats at all. I felt safer in Rome at night than I do in my home city or in my university's city. Keep an eye on your stuff, a friend of mine fell asleep on a train with her bag across from her (not next to her or on her lap, etc.) and a man walked by and took her bag and got off the train while she was still sleeping. If you are vigilant and take necessary precautions, you will be more than fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Finances were a bit difficult for me only because I am used to having a meal plan, etc. However, food and drinks were far more reasonable in Rome than any other country I visited or heard about. More than affordable if you SAVE MONEY BEFORE! Additionally, the conversion rate was terrible when I was abroad so I lost a bit of money on that, but that was truly unavoidable.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150-200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save money before you go like your life depends on it. You will be so thankful when you can afford to do trips while abroad. I wish I had saved more and spent less on little things here and there in order to afford another trip.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

As someone who knew no Italian before heading to Italy, I was surprised to see how far I got and how much I learned. That being said, all my classes were in English besides my Italian language class and I lived with fellow Americans so I am still far from fluent.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? none
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Try to learn a bit before you go, even just the basics such as how to order food. Additionally, don't be afraid to try and make mistakes. It's intimidating but everyone really appreciates your attempts and will help you out!

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • My peers were incredible, as was the administration at the school and all they did for us.
  • The teachers were so intelligent and interesting, as were the classes.
  • The food and location. Rome, the Eternal City, cannot be beat.
* What could be improved?
  • WiFi was an issue
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had known that everything would be alright! Also, I would have liked to have known who my roommates were going to be before I got there so we could talk over the summer, but it wasn't a big deal. I also wish I knew that younger people in Rome don't dress nearly as conservatively as they told us. I really limited my wardrobe based on color and coverage when Rome is such a diverse and populated place that I could have worn a lot more of my clothing that I left behind.
