Take me back to Rome! Past Review
By Kurt W (University of Maryland - College Park) - abroad from 08/27/2014 to 12/13/2014 with
The American University of Rome: Rome - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
From my experience I above all gained confidence. Studying abroad allowed me to gain independence in setting goals and reaching them, both in academics and in my other pursuits.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | None |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The academic environment at AUR is intense and driven by passionate and knowledgeable faculty. My studies included on site visits in Rome and travel throughout Italy. The courses integrate engaging with what Rome and Italy offer to make learning more enjoyable and more dynamic. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
AUR is well prepared to accommodate the needs of its students. The school is organized and helps to engage students with the many opportunities studying abroad in Rome offers. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Our housing arrangements were quite nice and worked well during the semester. Though the space was limited in the kitchen, our apartment provided ample room for studying, entertaining, and relaxing. Its close proximity to campus and the 8 tram line made commuting to class and travel within the city really easy. |
* Food: |
Finding good food in Rome is as easy as jumping out of a boat and hitting water. Personal, authentic cuisine can be found near campus and student apartments while grocery stores and markets are cheap and accessible. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Integration into local culture while at AUR is limited only to your willingness to engage with Italians. The program immerses students into Italian culture and empowers you to learn across cultures, both academically and in daily life and travel while abroad. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
AUR provides ample information on how to stay healthy while abroad to newly arrived students. Accessing medical care through the resident physician at AUR was as easy as reaching out for medical issues at home. Before arriving however, check that your vaccines are up to date and check that you will be able to fill any prescriptions you have! |
* Safety: |
At all points in orientation and welcome and throughout the semester, AUR puts the safety of its students first. A representative of the U.S. embassy visits the newly arriving students to inform them of safety tips and protocols in case of emergency. The city itself is comparably safe, but students should remember to stay safe and respectful when exploring the city, especially if you have been drinking and are unfamiliar with the area. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Its relatively easy for one to budget while in Rome. Money helps to visit sites and travel and can get you into some of the best restaurants you will ever eat at. However, many excursions and travel opportunities are free or cheap. Likewise, learning to cook with new foods and recipes can greatly lower your cost of living in Rome, the grocery stores and markets generally having low prices |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 100-250 U.S. dollars |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | -Learn to cook (at least a little) -Take advantage of Italy/Europe's relatively cheap travel options, i.e. train and RyanAir -Stay informed through Res-life of cheap or free opportunities in and around Rome |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
I was greatly encouraged to learn as much as possible before departure. While at AUR, language courses were interactive and helped form a working understanding of language that was immediately beneficial. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Beginner |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Intermediate |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | One course of Italian language |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Use it as much as possible. Even if its replacing one or two words at a time with their Italian equivalent it will make your study abroad experience better. By at least attempting to learn Italian you will endear yourselves to the locals and have open up more opportunities to grow, explore, and learn. |
