A real ripper Past Review

By (University of New Hampshire) - abroad from 07/14/2018 to 11/18/2018 with

The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Brisbane - University of Queensland

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to be independent, but also utilize the resources that I have. I learned when to ask for help and not be afraid to say you don't know about something. It was definitely worthwhile because you have to be vulnerable and take chances to ever learn or gain anything worth having!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I was challenged in Australia to learn a new system of teaching and testing, but I was thrilled to know that I could adjust and make the most of my educational experience at the University of Queensland. My professors were very helpful and intelligent. They were inspiring and made me feel excited about learning. The most challenging course that I took while I was abroad was set up in a way that made it easy to learn so that I ended up earning a very good grade.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I was very pleased with TEAN. Not only were they helpful with all the questions I had while applying to study abroad, but they did a great job of helping me adjust to life abroad.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I enjoyed the apartment that I arranged to live in. It was spacious and close to campus.

* Food:

There are a lot of options in Australia, although they do have less brands than in the U.S. While I missed some foods from home, I was happy to have tim tams!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone I came into contact with was welcoming and friendly whether they were native Australians or traveling here from other countries.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had an experience where I needed to consult a healthcare professional while abroad.

* Safety:

Brisbane was a very safe city. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very family-friendly and clean.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved my experience abroad and this program made the transition so much easier than I ever expected.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I was able to live comfortably and travel to various locations. I did not expect to have as much money left over at the end of my trip as I did. I didn't spend frivolously, but I also enjoyed my time and splurged when I wanted.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $60
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Learn how to cook! I saved a lot of money by buying in bulk and cooking for myself each night rather than ordering out or going out to eat. I waited until I was traveling to spend most of my money. Also, you can save a lot of money by opting out of buying pictures from tourist sites. Have your friends take pictures of you instead!
