10/10 TEAN Program @ University of Otago Experience!! Past Review
By Teagan (Accounting, University of Wisconsin - Madison) - abroad from 02/09/2018 to 06/20/2018 with
The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Dunedin - University of Otago
Studying abroad is not like going on vacation to another country because you have enough time to fully immerse yourself in the culture and experience life in another country. All the new experiences I had while abroad put me a little out of my comfort zone at times; however, I couldn't be more glad to have been a part of every experience I had while abroad. It was definitely worthwhile.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I took three courses at the University of Otago, and this was a perfect workload while abroad. Each of my classes had a few big assignments or tests throughout the semester and then a final exam worth around 50% of my grade. I was able to easily balance my time spent on school work and exploring the country. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
There was a TEAN staff member located at the University of Otago who was available for any questions we had or help we needed. She also organized small events throughout the semester to catch up. The international resources provided at the University of Otago were also extremely helpful if needed. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My housing was one reason my experience was so great. UniFlats does a great job with matching you and putting you in a location that is perfect for you, and responding to any issues we had with our flat. I lived in a 4 bedroom flat in a complex with 8 other flats which I really enjoyed because there was always someone around, and I got to meet so many people from around the world. I also loved having a local student (Kiwi Host) in each flat because they were able to help us adjust to living in a new country and show us some of their favorite local places. |
* Food: |
No matter what kind of food you are craving, there is probably a place to find it close to campus. There are also many grocery stores within walking distance of campus. Overall the food is not much different than in the US. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Living with a local student (Kiwi Host) made me feel very integrated with the local culture. She was able to answer any questions we had and made us feel welcome and at home from the very first day. My Kiwi Host also took us to some of her favorite local places! |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I personally did not have any health issues addressed during my time abroad, but some of my peers did. The healthcare seemed very easily accessible, and I never heard any complaints about it. |
* Safety: |
New Zealand is a very safe country; however, that doesn't mean you can be careless. Lock your flat doors when nobody is there and don't leave valuables out in plain sight to avoid theft. I never felt unsafe while walking around the city during the day or at night. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
It is doable to live on a student budget in Dunedin, but you have to be cautious of what you buy. Most items are imported to New Zealand which makes it more expensive. Gas/petrol is extremely expensive compared to the US and excursions or big attractions are generally pretty pricey. Pick and choose what you are spending your money on and do some research to find similar but less expensive options. |

The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |
