The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Seoul - Korea University

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about myself! It was great exposure to living independently, budgeting, and asking for help when I needed it.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I faced significant academic challenges this semester. I took two Computer Science courses—Theory of Computation and Software Security—along with an Economics course on the Theory of Taxation, a beginner's Korean class, and an elective on World Issues. I particularly enjoyed my elective classes, as they provided opportunities to connect with other study abroad students and delve into Korean culture. However, the three courses for my major and minor were especially difficult, requiring extensive study time. This is typical for CS courses, but the lack of guidance outside of class and the heavy reliance on midterm and final grades made it even more demanding. Next time, I would just take a lighter course load.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

On the other hand, TEAN surpassed my expectations with their warm welcome. They provided thorough orientation, maintained regular communication, and offered various excursions for students to participate in, which made me feel well-prepared to navigate my experiences in Korea. I enjoyed getting to know the staff members, and when some friends caught the common cold or faced other health issues, the staff were very helpful in guiding them on where to go for care.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing was clean and comfortable—I stayed in Anam International House, which was a co-ed dormitory and where most of the international students lived. I had a double room, which was more spacious than what I'm used to at my home university. It was nice to have a cleaning lady come by once a week to clean the dorm. Be prepared for some walking, though, as the dorm is situated on top of a hill. However, the scenic views made it worthwhile. Also we had a security guard 24 hours, and some students I knew lived on their own.

* Food:

Food was great, there were many options to eat out near the dormitory, and relatively many food options are cheaper than the US. Students are allowed to cook in the communal kitchens -- one for the entire dorm so if you wanted that option that is also a possibility. However, fridges were overcrowded, and most students ate out. Budgeting for food especially towards the end became a bit difficult, so I suggest being cautious with how you spend your money.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really enjoyed getting to meet Korean and foreign students alike. We were placed into KUBA groups (Korea University Buddy Association) and there were events with bigger, and the smaller buddy groups. There were opportunities to eat out with your groups like lunches/dinners, MT training (sleep away activities), and foreigner students were also able to join clubs which were posted when there were club fairs. My favorite activity was Ipselenti (school festival) which occurs in the Spring, and they bring in many artists from all over Korea. However, I do feel you have to put in the effort to talk to local students, and in the classroom everyone I've encountered mostly keeps to themselves.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I slipped and fell when going down a hill when it was raining one day and went to a clinic to get it checked out for. The doctor spoke English, and gave some medication for the pain. Overall, it was a great experience.

* Safety:

Very safe neighborhood, and overall experience. This made me feel comfortable to travel to other parts of Korea.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I had an amazing time with TEAN at Korea University. The friends I made along the way were incredible, and I made so many cherished memories. I knew very little about South Korea prior to experience but TEAN helped me adjust the best they could.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Daiso is located in Anam, and there are many CU's where students can buy easy, to go meals. Overall, eating out was not a problem to live on a student's budget or buying essentials.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Plan wisely! It is easy to get overwhelmed or excited to start shopping once you get there. Make a guestimate with how much you plan to spend on a monthly/weekly basis. Also -- many students decide to visit other countries once they get their Visa card, so budget even more wisely if you want to.

How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
