What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I met lots of people from different places around the USA as well as the globe. I got to gain a different perspective on how classes are taught. I got to travel to so many beautiful places and hike and swim in the clearest waters.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academic schedule was quite different only having classes twice a week but each class was three hours long. Some of my classes were very relevant but others seemed slower or not as rigorous compared to classes at my home university. Some classes offered great fieldtrips.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing for ICMS was an old monastery which was beautiful. I wish I had been given more knowledge of my room options before I chose. I was in a forced double that was very small and paying more than people in a triple that was a very spacious room with an ocean view. I felt that these arrangements were unfair.

* Food:

There was little variety with food and the windows of time that food was available were short. They did have a coffee machine that was nice, as well as fresh fruit for lunch. The food was most often an Asian fusion and did not satisfy.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt very involved in the local culture of Manly and Sydney and TEAN helped with that by providing immersion experiences.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There was a hospital across the street from ICMS that a few people had to use however I heard that medical care was very expensive, the school itself did not have any medical care services.

* Safety:

I felt very safe in Manly, Australia.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150/ week depending on where we traveled
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Plan trips ahead of time to save money on flights and certain trip activities that could be cheaper when bought online in advance. Try to travel with a group of 3 or more that way you can split lots of travel expenses.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
