Time of My Life: Culture, Adventure, Beauty Past Review
By Hillary M (Real Estate., University of Wisconsin - Madison) - abroad from 02/11/2013 to 07/02/2013 with
The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Sydney - University of New South Wales
My study abroad experience in Australia was truly unforgettable. I saw the most beautiful places, ate delicious food, explored so many different areas, met a ton of influential people, learned about different governments, etc. I gained a greater sense of independence and a greater understanding of how I feel about the importance of global knowledge. I intend to continue my travels hoping to one day return back to Australia. I had the time of my life on this trip, it was 100% worthwhile.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Professors were very accommodating and helpful. Classes were interesting and I feel I learned a lot not only from the professors and the material, but also from the students around me. |

* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The apartment I lived in was absolutely breathtaking with panoramic views of the city and close proximity to a mall, the central station, markets, and a park. The location was great as we were just a short train, bus, or taxi ride away from major spots. |
* Food: |
Food was very expensive. Would recommend grocery shopping. However, there are so many excellent restaurants all over Sydney featuring acclaimed chefs and terrific views of the city. I would highly suggest exploring different areas of Sydney to get the most out of living there. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Met so many Australians that were so inviting, personable, and informative. Since English is the language everyone speaks, it is so easy to acquaint yourself with the locals. All the people I met were very willing to share their favorite hotspots, neighborhoods, travel destinations, etc. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I did not contact the program when I had a medical issue. I went to a doctor that I was referred to. He was excellent. |
* Safety: |
Never felt unsafe. However, it is important to be cautious and make sure you are with other people at night. Other than that, I always felt comfortable walking around Sydney by myself or with friends. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Sydney is very expensive. While there are ways to live on a budget, I found it very hard because the prices were so high. However, if you set a budget for each week it is very possible to stick to it as you develop a routine. After all, you are living in Sydney for a few months, so finding a routine is inevitable. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 200+ |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Try to find a job before you leave in order to have spending money for social activities, traveling, shopping, food, etc. Go grocery shopping as often as you can. Book trips in advance. Find local deals. You may also be able to find an internship or job while studying abroad. This is not only great to earn a bit of income, but also to network and immerse yourself in Australia even more. |
