The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Sydney - University of Sydney

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I understood what it meant to be in another country and culture. Through my time abroad I grew into the person I know I meant to be. I gained the confidence I never had before, the determination to travel, and overall I was happier than I have ever been. I am so grateful I was able to go abroad, meet amazing individuals from all over the world, and have the support of TEAN and Quinnipiac University along the way.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

At the University of Sydney I had a rigorous, but manageable course schedule. I learned more about the Australian culture through my courses, but I had enough time to experience it for myself outside of the classroom too.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I could always reach out and know that any of my questions would be answered as quickly as possible.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I chose to live in Urbanest which was only a fifteen minute walk from campus. The rooms were nice and location was perfect, the only thing I would choose to do differently is pick a smaller room. I had a total of eight girls living in the apartment with me and at times it could be a lot, there is a smaller six person apartment that I think would of been perfect for me. But, this overall did not limit my experience because I met some of my best friends through living in this apartment.

* Food:

Food on campus was amazing, and in the city was great too.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I always would put myself out there to meet more people and immerse myself in the culture. At times this was hard because where I lived was mostly United States students, but I made up for this by being social in and outside of class.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any health problems but one of my friends did. She tore a ligament in her leg from hiking and went to health services and she was immediately greeted with care and kindness. In a few weeks she was back to walking like nothing happened, she even went bungee jumping.

* Safety:

There was never a time when I was concerned about my safety. I would walk home alone late at night, and would not be afraid.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The Education Abroad Network (TEAN) gave me the confidence, the enthusiasm, the attention, and support I needed to make this life-changing choice. I am forever grateful to all the staff that helped me before, during, and after this process to make every step of the way easy. TEAN helped me in my choice of going to the University of Sydney because I wanted to do an internship abroad. They lead me to the right direction, and asked me questions to find out what was most important for my time abroad. From this I decided to go to the best school for me, receive an internship through their campus program, and be in my top location.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Just because it is expensive in the city I tried my best to cut costs where I could. With that said I still ended up spending a good amount of money, but I also experienced so much during my time abroad and wouldn't change anything.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 150-200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If you can work before you go abroad, if you go out do not buy drinks, and buy only a few things when shopping for clothes. Trust me the clothes are really nice, but you do have to put everything back in your suitcase on the way back, so be conscious of that.

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

  • Attention to detail
  • Enthusiasm
* What could be improved?
  • Nothing to be improved from my experience
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew that choosing to live in the Urbanest Apartment meant that there were really only TEAN abroad students there. Just because being in this environment with all Americans made it hard to meet Australians.
