I came back with more confidence and I was able to grow as a person. I learned to be the best version of myself and also how to be more loving to others. Along with having more patience. - Cristo Rey Jesuit High School View Entire Review

About

Explore South Africa's diversity, complex history, and contemporary realities during this high school summer abroad program while learning entrepreneurial and leadership skills to make a difference in your own community.

Embark on an immersive journey through multicultural South Africa on this summer abroad program for high school students. Learn about the country’s historic transition from apartheid to democracy, its cultural diversity, and its ongoing efforts to advance civil society and human rights. Visit key historical sites, such as the Apartheid Museum and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in prison.

The program begins at the southern tip of the country, in Cape Town, and will continue on to either Kranshoek, an Afrikaans-speaking Griqua community, or Kwanokuthula, a Xhosa-speaking community, for a 10-day stay with your host family. Participate in a service project working alongside local residents. Receive Afrikaans language lessons and participate in hands-on workshops focused on dance, music, and drumming. As the program travels north, you will experience the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Mpumalanga, and a three-day safari in Kruger National Park.

In Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, you will spend a week attending workshops at the African Leadership Academy, a catalyst in leadership training that aims to bring together and train entrepreneurial and ethical leaders who want to transform Africa and the world for the better. The program concludes in Johannesburg.

Community Service Certificate: At the conclusion of this program, participants will earn a community service certificate noting how many hours of community service they completed.
