Academics were ok, being abroad was great! January 05, 2023
By Lucas L (Environmental Policy, Middlebury College) - abroad from 08/15/2022 to 12/08/2022 with
The University of New South Wales: Sydney - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Gained independence and perspective. Matured as an individual and learned about myself. Very worthwhile, not sure I could have matured in the same way at Middlebury.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Different to Middlebury, high quality professors, many resources available, medium rigor was a pro because facilitated abroad experience |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Very hands off, requires some level of independence to succeed |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Lived off campus, hard to find affordable housing in Sydney that checks all the boxes |
* Food: |
Lived off campus, cooked for myself. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Interacted with the international community/ other study abroad students. Hard to interact with local Australians |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
I would not directly enroll, I would join a program that would facilitate my stay. I would also do a full year |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Sydney is an expensive city. I lived off campus and housing was definitely the most expensive factor. Hard to live on a small budget and get the full study abroad experience while living off campus |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $500 |

Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |
