ThinkImpact: Panama Institute for Health or Social Innovation
What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I stayed in a rural community in Panama as part of a ThinkImpact Social Innovation program in January, 2015. It was a wonderful experience to stay with the community members and experience life as a community member would. Our host family and other community members were very friendly and the entire experience gave us a glimpse into a completely different life from what we are used to. I really lie the concept of the program – using local assets to bring about social and sustainable change in the community. I have learnt a lot from this program – team work where we didn’t speak the same language, importance of non-verbal communication skills, adjusting to a life very different from the ones we live in urban cities and most importantly, interacting with community members to discover details about their lives and integrating ourselves into the community to help bring about sustainable change. I would highly recommend this program!
