Trinity Christian College: Seville - Semester in Spain

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I find that it provided a new view on different cultures and environments. It really gives you a new understanding of independence to be out of the country and away from your family.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Fall 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

As everything was taught entirely in Spanish and the professors were all locals my educational experience there was great. The classes were also very small allowing you to really connect with the professors and challenge you furthermore to participate in class. The workload was not an overload, teaching was very casual and informative, and the grading system was the same as in the US. Amazing.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

This program and the administration was very accessible, productive, informative, personable and supportive. The program size was perfect, it was 50 students. It was more than I could have asked or hoped for.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived with a host family on the border of Los Remedios and Triana in an apartment.

I lived with a woman and her son, along with another student. It was probably the best overall experience of my semester abroad. It was around a 20 min walk to class and in a very residential area.

* Food:

My host mother cooked all our food. It was plenty of food and amazing at that.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We went on multiple field trips that were great. Spanish culture is amazing.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never felt unsafe in Seville.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would advise budgeting your money so you can travel and spend otherwise how you wish without overspending.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
Language acquisition improvement?

I lived with a host family that only spoke Spanish and all of the professors spoke Spanish and were from Spain. Yes, Spanish was necessary in everyday interactions and most of the Spaniards I met spoke very little English. It is like most programs, the other students were Americans so you could speak as little or as much Spanish as you wanted. The opportunities were there and available it was a matter of taking advantage of them.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It is a christian based program. If you are looking for a program that will provide christian support this is perfect. On that same note there is a student ministries coordinator who organizes that aspect but it is not overwhelmingly religious if you don't want it to be. The professors are all locals and not necessarily Christians. They are all amazing and classes are amazing.
