Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My two courses were challenging, interesting, and relevant to te context of learning in Talloires. The art history course focused on impressionism and post-impressionism. We visited museums in Paris and Grenoble, and also went to the exact place that Cezanne painted Talloires. Most of us were in the class to fill an art requirement but ended up really loving it. The second course was on emerging global health crises. We took field trips to Lyons and Geneva and learned A LOT; in fact, it might have been one of my most content-heavy class in Community Health at Tufts.

On-site administration of your program

Staff was always accessible and knew anything you might have a question about or where to get the answer. The professors were very knowledgeable and interacted on a very personal level. The local staffer, Bernard, led incredible hikes and totally enriched the whole experience. The program had the right number of students where you'd always have someone to hang out or study with but large enough where you didn't know everyone beyond their name.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Shared a room in an apartment in Annecy with another Tufts student (did not know her before). The family was a mother with 3 children (one was away at college). It was sort of small but comfortable. <br /><br /> The location was perfect - I was right in the city center so it was walking distance from everything and very safe. And did I mention BEAUTIFUL?! Every morning, you'd smell fresh bread and see mountains as a backdrop to the lake and park. The bus I took to school was a 30 minute ride and came frequently enough. The host family was pretty good but not without a few issues; however, I feel strongly that that was all part of the experience.

What I had was good, but my family never really understood the word "vegetarian".

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were weekly hikes, class fieldtrips, an evening at cheese-making farm, cocktail night, a cruise, and unofficial bar nights or park nights. All were great. But it is what you make of it; some students didn't go and I think they got less out of the program overall.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Living with a family was incredible...I got SO much better and felt MUCH more comfortable speaking. But it was also nice that most of the program was in english so I didn't have to stress about not being completely competent.
