Tufts Programs Abroad: Tufts in Ghana
Aside from viewing America from another place and having to adapt to unfamiliar customs, habits, and ways of life, I learned infinite amounts about myself which is the best thing you can get out of any experience.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 0-2 weeks |
The term and year this program took place: | Fall 2009 |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I wish that some of the university professors new more worldly and less inclined to make false blanket statements about America and Americans. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The Bilson's are the nicest people you will ever meet and will answer any questions you have to the best of their ability. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
We lived in a dorm-style building called a hostel with communal, single-sex bathrooms and double rooms with furniture and ceiling fans.

My roommate was quite difficult but the majority of the people in the hostel were very nice. |
* Food: |
It gets a bit old, but the food is very food and there are more familiar, but expensive, options off-campus if you need that comfort. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The group trips were very refreshing, shopping in the markets is tiring but very rewarding, and the nightlife is very different but still fun. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I got malaria once even though I took my pills religiously and the Bilson's made sure they got us all of the health-related care we needed. In terms of safety, as long as you use good judgement, you'll be fine. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | We were given the equivalent $400 per month in a stipend. I didn't go into my own bank account once the whole program and came home with the equivalent of about &150. Some people returned with more and some with less. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Just make sure you keep track of what you're spending, how much you bring with you to a place, bargain down to the lowest possible price, and plan for ATMs to be out of order. |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
Language acquisition improvement? |
People in Ghana prefer to speak to foreigners in English instead of Twi so learning it wasn't much of an advantage. |

Comments: | Mw. Brown at Tufts does a great job preparing your for this course. Though the teaching style and vocabulary are quite different, meeting with the Teaching Assistant made the class much more bearable. |

Ghanaian Popular Music |
Course Department: | Music (MUSC) 315 |
Instructor: | Collins |

Comments: | The name was a little deceiving because you actually start with "popular" music from centuries ago and work your way not quite back to now. The professor has crazy stories though! |
