London: The Experience of a Lifetime! Past Review

Tufts Programs Abroad: Tufts in London
My study abroad experience was definitely worthwhile; I learned a lot about myself, and experienced a lot of different cultures.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
UCL placed a lot more emphasis on self learning; the lectures were interesting, but often the papers were covered topics that were not covered in class. For science classes the exams mostly focused on lecture material, but only a fraction of the material covered in class was actually on the exam. The British academic system was definitely not as changing than the American academic system - it was just different. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The Tufts in London program directors are amazing - they were always available to help us out with anything, and did a great job organizing subsidized events. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in Campbell House East, which is a renovated Victorian town house very close to campus. I had a small but nice room with a sink - bathrooms and showers were in the hall. I shared a kitchen with 10 other students, which was tight but worked out alright. Campbell East is definitely one of the best dorms on campus. |
* Food: |
My cooking isn't that great, but it was really easy to get to the grocery store (about 1/4 mile from the dorm). |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
London is a great location for European and Middle-Eastern travel; I definitely took advantage of that! UCL has a lot of great societies and sports teams, and Tufts in London organized many subsidized meals and events. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
All of us with the TiL program were registered with the NHS; I never used it, but it seemed like a fairly efficient program. London is a very safe city, and I never had any problems with safety. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | During the academic year I probably spent about 80 pounds on food and personal expenses a week, but I spend much more (probably around 300 a week) when travelling. London has a lot of great museums and free events, so it is definitely possible to have a great time in London on a budget. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I tried to live frugally during the academic year to save money for travelling; the TiL stipend definitely helps with the expenses of travelling. Also, the txts booth in Leicester Square has reduced-priced tickets for same-day shows, which is a great way to see shows in the West End. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | This was a great program, and I would recommend seeing as much as possible in London and Europe - don't worry too much about academics! |

London Before the Great Fire of 1666 |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Dr. Milne |

Comments: | This was an AWESOME course - my favorite course at UCL. It was very interesting, and every class toured a different part of London and covered the history of London. A great course to get to know your host city. |

Mammalian Physiology |
Course Department: | PHOL1001 |
Instructor: | Dr. Houston |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | This was a good course - the lectures were interesting and the exam was very straight-forward. The course included a lab component, and I would recommend it to other study abroad Biology majors or pre-meds. |

General Biochemistry |
Course Department: | BIOC2002 |
Instructor: | |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | I wouldn't recommend this course for a study abroad student - it is the second year biochemistry background, so unless you have a background in biochemistry and really find it interesting, it's not worth taking. |

Life and Death in the Ancient World |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | This was a good course, but it was a first year seminar and sort of randomly organized on general archaeology/classics. It had a good overview of the topics, but wasn't the most interesting or well-taught. |

Field Course in Environmental Biology |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Dr. Wingler |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | Great course - a week in Hampstead Heath in London and a week in Pitlockry, Scotland. It is a second-year course, but not too challenging. The work load was much higher than for other classes at UCL (since it is a full course compressed into 2 weeks), but I really enjoyed it. |

History and Literature of War: WWII and Beyond |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | This was an interesting class, but wasn't well organized, and the requirements for the essays were not very clear. It was interesting learning about WWII from the European (instead of American) perspective, though. |
