United Planet: Volunteer Abroad in Spain - 6 or 12 months

With its origins in the ancient Roman period and its terrain littered with castles, Spain invites you to submerge yourself in its exquisite landscape. Once the most powerful empire in the world following the discovery of the Americas, Spain became a democracy as recently as 1978. Spain encompasses the majority of the Iberian Peninsula, facing Africa to the south and France to the east. This central placement, and its turbulent history, resulted in a country with unique African and European characteristics. Volunteers often note with surprise that Spain is not a tropical country. The climate differs greatly by region. Dancing, tapas, rich folklore, close-knit family life, historic traditions and plenty of outdoor activities are just a few of the things you can look forward to enjoying during your stay here. United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Spain, you will be hosted by AFAIJ, ICYE’s partner organization. AFAIJ was created in response to needs all over Europe and, thanks to volunteers, fulfills its vision for providing training and international participation in community projects.
