University College Cork: Cork - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
My experience and what I learned are not able to be expressed in words. Living in another country changes who you are, it changes your opinion of everything. I feel more confident, more at ease with different surroundings, I also feel more opinionated and frustrated with people's ignorance of other cultures. Everyone should study abroad.

* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The class system is very different in Ireland, there are no attendance points, tests, or homework. The entire grade earned is based on a single essay and topic given towards the beginning of the semester. The teachers were very knowledgeable about their subjects and it was incredibly interesting to hear events from a different viewpoints. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in city center in Cork, the building was small and housed mainly international students. Living with mainly Europeans and Irish was the best decision I could have made. When abroad, make friends with people from other countries, sticking to only Americans limits your trip. |
| * Food: |
English Market in Cork is incredible, fresh food for incredibly reasonable prices. Best place to get groceries in Cork. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
If in Ireland, get to know the Irish people. My Irish friends are what made my experience so wonderful. Galway trip with the International Student society was a great time, go on it if you can. |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
| * Safety: |
Cork is a very safe place, don't do anything stupid and you'll never even feel threatened. Everyone walks everywhere so the streets are well lit and patroled. |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
