My Life Changing Experience in Ireland Past Review

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Overall the academics at University College Cork were alot different than at Suny Purchase. The professors even told us they expected us to not do all of the readings and show up for every class. The work load was very easy, we only had midterms and then an end of the semester essay and then a final. There was rarely any work in between it was very easy. The teaching methods we're pretty much the same although the system is not as organized as it is in America. We didn't register for classes at the beginning we kind of just showed up and "shopped" around for classes. It was definitley an interesting experience, I feel as though I would've learned more this semester being at an American University but I dont regret any of it.

On-site administration of your program

My host country program administration was indeed very helpful. I could go to their office and everyone would be so nice and friendly and answer any questions that I had. They really did help us to adjust into the country very well, we got to meet alot of other americans which helped us to feel more comfortable and at home. Overall they exceeded my expectations.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived with Irish students and with American students as well in Farranlea Hall. The housing was fantastic I loved my room and the common room I shared with my house mates. I felt very safe and comfortable living there it was very convienent that there was a bus stop right outside the apartment as well as a little grocery type store across the street. The owners made us feel very welcome when I first arrived. They supplied us with some breakfast food and just a few basic essential things to get accustomed into our new apartment. It was wonderful.

The food was not my favorite. It was very expensive and it mainley consisted of fried food and toasted sandwiches. Thats really the best I can describe it. It was definitley easier to just go to the grocery store and make something myself that I know I was going to like.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

My social and cultural experience in Ireland is definitley one that I will never forget. I met so many nice people and I made very good friends whom I still talk to everyday. One trip I went on with my early start program that was definitley a memorable experience was when I went to one of the Aran Islands. This island has a population of about 200 and it was the most beautiful thing i've ever seen. The beautiful green hills and the scenery was so lovely i've never seen quite anything like it. That trip was just one of the many that my friends and I embarked on it, and my life has changed so much since I went to Ireland, it was truly an amazing journey.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I would reccomend never going anywhere alone when you are not with at least one other person. The safety in Cork was pretty good but I would still be careful anywhere I went.
