University College Cork: Cork - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I thoroughly enjoyed and valued the classes that I took in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering departments. I learned a lot.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

After signing up for my modules, my interaction with UCC's International Programs Office was minimal. If any kind of support was available it was probably something that you needed to specifically seek out.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The chaplaincy organized regular trips to sites of religious significance in Munster. I found that this was a good way to see Cork and the countryside near Cork and hear lectures on Irish history. The chaplaincy also organized an Irish food and culture event which was a good way to avoid cooking supper for a night. I was somewhat fortunate (I guess) to see the Queen of England during her visit to Cork (even if it was at a distance). I was also in Ireland during President Obama's visit but he didn't come to Cork. There were a lot of American flags flying in Dublin around that time though.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Cork is probably pretty safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? As always, you need to decide which expenditures are actually important. When making trips to Tesco or Centra for groceries, I tried to focus on healthy and calorie-rich foods. Rice goes a long way if you buy it in bulk. I found that Tesco's canned mackerel fillets in tomato sauce is a economical option (~0.89 euros/tin).

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
